Pilot Rock SD School Board names three finalists to be District’s next Superintendent

The Pilot Rock School District Board of Directors is pleased to announce that three finalists have been selected for further consideration to be the District’s next Superintendent beginning July 1, 2020. Steve Staniak is currently serving as the District’s Superintendent and will be retiring on June 30, 2020. The Board and a screening committee of staff and community thoroughly reviewed the applicant field and the Board conducted initial interviews with six candidates before selecting the finalists. The three finalists are:

Troy M. Jerome Troy Jerome is currently the Assistant Principal and Athletic Director for Pendleton High School where he has served since 2012. From 2010 to 2012, he was the Principal at Pilot Rock High School after previously serving as Assistant Principal for four years. He taught Physical Education, Health, Science, Training and Conditioning, and Leadership for the Pilot Rock School District for 10 years. He also served as the baseball coach at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, OR and for Central Washington University in Ellensburg, WA. For 13 years, Jerome was the head football coach at Pilot Rock School District and for five years the head baseball coach. Jerome has a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Eastern Washington University and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health from Eastern Oregon University.

Kevin J. Olds Kevin Olds is currently the Principal for Shughart Middle School which is a part of the Department of Defense Education Activity in Cameron, North Carolina. He has held other positions with the DoDEA including Principal at Lester Middle School and Stearly Heights Elementary School in Okinawa, Japan. Olds has been a Principal at Estacada Junior High School for four years and Clackamas River Elementary School Principal for three years – both in the Estacada School District. His teaching experience includes five years in elementary grades and as a middle school specialist. He was nominated as Middle School Principal of the Year for 2019-20 and selected as the Pacific Region Principal of the Year for 2017-20 while working for the DoDEA. Olds has a Master of Science degree in Education Administration K-12 from Portland State University and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Western Washington University.

Brian C. Rayburn Brian Rayburn has been the Superintendent for the Lima School District in Lima, Montana since 2015. He was Superintendent for the Essex-Calendonia Supervisory Union School District in Concord, Vermont for three years before moving to Montana. Other administrative experience includes time as Principal for Blue Mountain Union School (PK-12) in Wells River, VT for three years and Principal at Sutton School (K-8) in Sutton, VT for three years. His teaching experience includes stops in California, Hawaii and Vermont. Rayburn has a Master of Education degree in Education Leadership from Plymouth State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science Teaching from Brigham Young University – Hawaii Campus.

The Pilot Rock School Board will now begin thorough background and reference checks for these finalists. While the background and reference checks are underway, the Board will bring the finalists to the District for an opportunity to meet with staff and community on Thursday, March 12, 2020. Staff members and community members will have a chance to meet and ask questions of the finalists from 5:00 through 6:30 on that night at the high school building, followed by refreshments. The Board will also conduct a second interview with each finalist in executive session to finish their visit. The Board expects to announce the next steps in the superintendent search soon.
